Chris Novoa's Most Shallow Depths

How i get to work when excuses to not abound…

Or: how an avid procrastinator finally gets to work.

Often severe spells of procrastination are spurred on by a feeling of being overwhelmed by a project, disorganized and generally making a mountain out of a molehill, even if it is a big project.

This isn't even addressing any tendencies to simply be lazy which ultimately must be overcome at ones own expense. My trick to this is to brainstorm on something that will motivate me to complete the job - typically the reward at the end but more often than not it isn't the reward that is more motivating but the 'hunger' in the meantime -- rent/bills are due, something important needs to be taken care of, etc. This is not even taking into account any actual deadlines.

As far as I know, the greatest motivators in the world are hunger and ego. Hunger is a metaphor for any immediate need but can be taken literally in certain circumstances and ego expresses the need to prove ones worth and place in the world. These are, however, only a motivating factors when working out of a rut or starting from the bottom. Motivation becomes increasingly difficult as NEEDS become WANTS and WANTS are more easily attained at which time incessant boredom sets in and once frivolous or extraneous ordeals become the primary focus.

the workforce!

It's finally happened... no, I'm not insane yet... As I posted previously on contemplating joining the workforce, well I have. Ironically not by my own doing, things seem to always just fall into my lap.

So the job is at a small marketing firm. They do ad marketing throughout the houston area, covering about 80sq miles of territory. I am lead designer on their full color door hanger product, which puts me in charge of everything after the sales of ads; graphic design and communicating changes to clients, managing the input/output workflow by print deadlines, and whatever else comes with it. That's about it. I will be working a minimum of 20 hours a week, variable because of my own chauffer schedule, but can make up to 40 hours a week at $15/hour. For saying that I wasn't really looking for this particular line of work, the pay isn't too bad - compared to what I would have settled for.

late 5am again

What is it about this time of day that renders me so helplessly bored. As if my motivation drops to zero and my desire to create rises exponentially. Strange how that happens, it's like writer's block, and I'm getting a bit restless and stir-crazy.

I think it's a sign that about this hour, I should go do something active, like run around the block 50 times or start gardening while it's still cool out - I have been known for my midnight gardening, I'm sure the neighbors all think I'm insane or burying dead things under cover of darkness or something to that effect.
